For many small and medium businesses (SMBs), generative AI has moved from curiosity to consideration — and increasingly, to action. 

 

The Future of Operations 2025 study reveals a surge in generative AI interest and investment across the region. 44% of SMBs in APAC expect AI to be a top driver of transformation in their business by 2027. Yet fewer than 15% currently report mature adoption. 

This is no longer about theoretical innovation — it’s a scramble to put AI to work in real, everyday tasks. Nowhere is that more apparent than in the productivity domain, where Microsoft 365 Copilot is changing the conversation for partners.

Across the board, SMBs report high levels of intention to adopt AI: 

  • 43% plan to adopt or expand their use of generative AI tools between now and 2027. 
  • 41% intend to implement AI-powered operational support capabilities. 
  • 39% are looking at AI for business applications, from ERP to CRM. 
  • 38% see AI as integral to their cloud strategy and data management. 

 

So are the barriers.

SMBs also identified a clear set of obstacles that stand in the way of successful AI adoption: 

  • Lack of internal skills to manage or derive value from AI. 
  • Uncertainty about security and governance for AI-generated content. 
  • Concerns about cost, change fatigue, and integration complexity. 
  • Poor data readiness — with many SMBs lacking the clean, structured data needed to power effective AI.

SMBs are on the hunt for partners to help them overcome these barriers.

According to the study, SMBs’ top IT objectives in 2025 include:

  • Modernising core infrastructure
  • Improving security posture
  • Enhancing user productivity
  • Driving faster business insights
  • Linking IT initiatives to business outcomes

The corresponding IT actions reinforce the challenge: while SMBs want AI, they still need to complete foundational work:

  • Modernising identity and access control
  • Replacing legacy infrastructure
  • Automating operational workflows
  • Training users on new tools
  • Integrating siloed data

As a result, Copilot becomes the logical entry point for SMBs — because it leverages the Microsoft 365 environment they already know and trust, and it creates a use case that ties directly to business outcomes.
